Google Business Profile: The Free Tool That Puts Local Businesses on the Map
When someone nearby searches “plumber near me”, “best salon in Manchester”, or “coffee shop open now”, Google rarely shows them a list of websites first. It shows a map and three businesses — the local pack. Those three spots get the calls. And the ticket into that pack is not an ad budget. It is a free tool most businesses set up once, badly, and never touch again: the Google Business Profile.
If you run a local business in the UK, the USA, Europe, or the UAE, this profile is probably your highest-return marketing asset — because it is the first thing a ready-to-buy customer sees, and because most of your competitors are using it at half strength.
What a Google Business Profile Actually Does
Your profile is the panel that appears on Google Search and Google Maps with your name, photos, opening hours, phone number, reviews, and directions. It does three jobs:
- It proves you exist and are open. Customers decide in seconds. A profile with current hours, real photos, and a working phone number wins that decision.
- It puts you in the map results. Local pack rankings are driven heavily by profile completeness, category choice, and review signals — not by how much you spend.
- It converts without a website visit. Many customers call directly from the profile. For service businesses, the profile often produces more enquiries than the website itself.
The Setup Most Businesses Get Wrong
Choose the right primary category. This is the single strongest ranking signal you control. A “dentist” and a “cosmetic dentist” compete in different result sets. Pick the category that matches what customers actually buy from you, then add secondary categories for your other services.
Complete every field. Business name (your real name — keyword-stuffed names get suspended), address or service area, phone, website, hours including holiday hours, attributes, and a description written for customers, not for an algorithm.
Add real photos, regularly. Premises, team, work in progress, finished jobs. Profiles with genuine, recent photos earn more trust and more clicks than profiles with a logo and nothing else. Never use stock photos of someone else’s business.
Turn on messaging and the call button. Every friction step between “found you” and “talking to you” costs enquiries.
Reviews: The Engine of the Whole System
Reviews influence both ranking and conversion, and they compound. A business with 80 recent reviews will usually out-convert a slightly better-ranked competitor with 9 old ones.
- Ask at the moment of satisfaction — right after a completed job, a delivered order, a finished appointment. Send the customer your review link directly.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, briefly and professionally. Your reply is written for the next customer reading it, not for the reviewer.
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them. Fake reviews are against Google’s policies, they get removed in purges, and a suspension can take your whole profile down with them.
Posts, Services and Products: The Free Shelf Space
Inside the profile you can publish short posts (offers, events, updates), list every service with descriptions and prices where appropriate, and — for retail — show products. Most competitors leave this empty. Filling it gives Google more reasons to match you to more searches, and gives customers a reason to choose you without leaving the results page.
Region Notes: UK, USA, Europe, UAE
- UK: “Near me” and town-level searches dominate local discovery. Keep your service areas accurate rather than claiming the whole county — relevance beats reach in local rankings.
- USA: Review volume is intensely competitive in trades and healthcare. A steady review habit matters more than any one-time burst.
- Europe: Make sure your profile language, categories and hours match the country you trade in, and keep your business details consistent with local directories — consistency of name, address and phone is a trust signal everywhere in the EU as well.
- UAE: Customers rely heavily on Maps for navigation, and WhatsApp is the default contact channel — make sure the phone number on your profile is the WhatsApp number customers should actually reach you on, and keep location pins precise in areas where street addresses are loosely used.
The 30-Minute Monthly Routine
A profile is not a launch task; it is a habit. Once a month: check hours are right, add a handful of new photos, publish one post, reply to any unanswered reviews, and confirm your services list still matches what you sell. Thirty minutes. That steady maintenance is exactly why maintained profiles pull away from set-and-forget competitors over a year.
When to Get Help
Doing the basics yourself is free and worth it. Help makes sense when you are suspended, when a competitor keeps taking the map spot you should own, when you have multiple locations, or when nobody in the business has the thirty minutes. Our Local SEO & Google Business Profile service covers the full setup, the category and services work, and the monthly routine — for businesses across the UK, USA, Europe & UAE.
