How to Make a Website Mobile Friendly: 9 Fixes That Win Customers in 2026

Most of your customers will meet your business on a phone first. For many small businesses, well over half of website visits now come from mobile devices — and Google ranks the mobile version of your site, not the desktop one. If your site is hard to use on a small screen, you are not just annoying visitors; you are losing rankings, calls and sales.

The good news: learning how to make a website mobile friendly is mostly a checklist, not a rebuild. Here are the nine fixes that matter most.

1. Test Your Site the Way Google Does

Start with an honest measurement. Open your website on your own phone and try to do what a customer would do: find your phone number, read your services and send an enquiry. Then run Google’s PageSpeed Insights test for a mobile score and specific issues. If the test feels slow or fiddly to you, it feels worse to a customer who does not know your business yet.

2. Make Text Readable Without Pinching

If visitors have to pinch and zoom to read, most will leave. Body text should be at least 16px, with clear contrast against the background and comfortable line spacing. Headings should break content into short sections that are easy to scan while standing in a queue or sitting in a truck between jobs.

3. Fix Your Tap Targets

Buttons and links that are too small or too close together are the classic mobile frustration. Make your main buttons — Call, WhatsApp, Get a Quote — big enough to tap with a thumb, with space around them. Your phone number should be a tap-to-call link everywhere it appears, especially in the header.

4. Speed It Up — Ruthlessly

On mobile connections, every extra second costs you customers. The biggest wins are usually: compress large images (your homepage does not need a 4MB photo), remove sliders and animations you do not need, and use a fast theme with caching enabled. Aim for the page to feel usable within about two to three seconds.

5. Simplify the Menu

A desktop menu with ten items becomes a mess on mobile. Keep the mobile menu short: Services, Pricing, About, Contact — and put a call or WhatsApp button where the thumb can reach it. If a visitor needs more than two taps to reach your contact page, the menu is too deep.

6. Shorten Your Forms

Long forms kill mobile enquiries. On a phone, every extra field is a reason to quit. Ask only for a name, a phone number or email, and one message box. You can collect the details later, on the call. And make sure the form fields are large, clearly labeled and easy to type in — including a proper phone keyboard for the phone field.

7. Check Your Popups and Chat Widgets

Popups that cover the whole screen and cannot be closed are a double loss: customers leave, and Google dislikes intrusive popups on mobile. If you use a chat or WhatsApp button, check that it does not cover your call button or your form’s submit button on small screens.

8. Make Buying and Booking Effortless

For e-commerce and bookings, the mobile checkout is where money is made or lost. Offer guest checkout, keep the steps few, show the total cost early, and support the payment options phone users expect. Test a complete purchase on your own phone at least once — you will find friction you never see on desktop.

9. Re-Test on a Real, Ordinary Phone

Emulators are fine, but nothing beats a real mid-range Android phone on a normal mobile connection — that is what a large share of your customers actually use. Load your homepage, a service page and your contact page. Time them. Tap everything. Fix what annoys you, because it annoys customers more.

The Bottom Line

Knowing how to make a website mobile friendly is really about respect for your customer’s time: readable text, big tap targets, fast pages, short forms and an easy way to call you.
